Union Bank demos building destroyed by flood
Comments 0 | Recommend 0OTTAWA — Five months after flood waters crippled the village, Union Bank demolished its old bank building to make room for a new and larger building. The new bank at 245 W. Main St. should be up and open for business by July, said Norm Schnipke, a retail banking manager with The Union Bank Co.“The building will be 3,000 square feet where the old building was 2,000 square feet,” Schnipke said. While that building is being constructed, customers can continue to use the “bank in a box” set up on site — a trailer converted into a bank with one drive-through lane, he said. The new building will have a two-story main entrance, Schnipke said. The office also will include more staff offices, four instead of two, and more space for the staff of eight, he said.Schnipke said customers have been very patient with the current setup.“We appreciate the patience they have provided to us because we know it’s been a headache to them,” he said.Schnipke also asked for further patience since the banking trailer will remain onsite as construction occurs, he said.“It’s going to be kind of hectic during the construction because there is limited space,” he said. The flood waters rose more than two feet inside the bank, destroying walls and anything in its path. With the walls needing to be completely replaced, it was a better option to rebuild, he said.
