OTTAWA — The Division II girls district title came down to the sixth runner.
When Saturday’s race was over, both Van Wert and Coldwater had 70 points. To determine a winner, it came down to whose sixth runner, the first non-scorer, had a better race.
Van Wert’s sixth runner finished eight spots better than Coldwater’s, giving the Cougars the district crown.
Van Wert was coming off a victory at last week’s Western Buckeye League Meet at Defiance.
“Winning league last week was very special, especially for our seniors,” Van Wert girls coach Brendon Moody said. “But, to win a district championship is really special.”
Leading the way for Van Wert was Lauren Taylor, who won Saturday’s race in 19 minutes, 4.40 seconds. And just like at last week’s league race, Defiance’s Megan Vogelsong finished second (19:22.30).
“I told them that the key was being able to win the second mile,” Moody said. “At mile one, I think we were sitting about fourth. But, they got themselves in position and then really competed from there.”
As a team, Defiance finished third (82), while Shawnee had the next-best local finish in sixth (140).
The top four teams at the district meet at Ottawa will advance to next week’s D-II regional at Tiffin. Also, the top 16 individual placers advance. The other locals in D-II who will compete at Tiffin include: Shawnee’s Adrienne Pohl (sixth, 19:53), Molly Scott (10th, 20:20) and Emily Wolery (15th, 20:31) and Celina’s Ashley Figel (eighth, 20:10).
On the boys’ side in D-II, Defiance took first with 50 points. However, there were just seven points that separated the next three qualifying spots.
Celina’s Andrew Goodwin blazed the course with a winning time of 16:06, defeating Defiance’s Trevin Flickinger (16:28). Shawnee finished second (85), while Napoleon was third (89) and Van Wert was fourth (92).
Shawnee was led by the Diltz twins — Garrett (fifth, 16:56) and Zach (seventh, 17:06). Van Wert’s top finishers were Jared Fleming (sixth, 17:05) and Jacob Bagley (11th, 17:36).
Local runners advancing to next week’s D-II regional at Tiffin as individuals were Bath’s Tommy Mault (12th, 17:39) and Ryan Schadewald (14th, 17:42): Wapakoneta’s Dylon Webb (13th, 17:39) and Caleb Hennon (16th, 17:45).
