Mays running again for 5th District seat

NORWALK — A Democrat who didn’t make it through a special primary election this fall to fill the 5th Congressional District seat is giving it another try.George Mays, of Norwalk, has filed to appear on the March 4 primary ballot. He is the first to file. The primary deadline is Friday. Mays was defeated by Democrat Robin Weirauch in the fall primary to fill the seat vacated after the death of U.S. Rep. Paul Gillmor. Bob Latta won the seat over Weirauch last month. Mays, who owns a karaoke and disc jockey business, could not be reached for comment Thursday. In a news release and on his Web site, Mays said his platform would be based on “simple common sense.” “It is the kind of sense that you have and believe in,” he said. “It is the kind that seems to be lacking in Washington.”An example of common sense, he said, is that the federal government should not spend more money than it receives. He said Congress should put a two-year moratorium on earmarked spending.Mays also said it makes sense to build an infrastructure of power plants fueled from renewable sources, develop a districtwide plan to increase the number of good paying jobs, and better control the country’s borders.
