MIDDLE POINT — One of the keys to being a successful volleyball team is getting the ball to its big hitters.
Delphos Jefferson did just that in its 3-1 victory — 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-16 — over Delphos St. John’s in a Division IV sectional final
at Lincolnview High School on Saturday. With the win over St. John’s, Jefferson will advance to the district semifinals at Coldwater. The Wildcats will play St. Henry at 8:15 p.m. Tuesday.
Bridget Culp led Jefferson with 18 kills, while teammate Mallorie Wilson knocked down 16.
    Delphos Jefferson coach
Diane Wilson said it took her team a little while before it settled into its offense.
“I thought we started slow in every game,” Wilson said. “There were times that we did not pass very well. We couldn’t get into any rhythm. You have to be able to pass.”
Wilson said once her team was able to make the passes, however, they were able to take control.
“We told Mallorie (Wilson) that she didn’t need to hit everything hard,” coach Wilson said. “She just needed to play smart.
“With Bridget (Culp), we told her that when it got to the front row, she had to get it down.”
Lindsy Reindel led St. John’s with 18 kills and 10 blocks.

Wilson said her game plan was to try to take advantage of the occasional absence of Reindel in the front row.
“(St. John’s) can block really well and they are so tall,” Wilson said. “Our game plan was to get it done when Reindel was out of the game.”
St. John’s coach Kellie Sterling said her squad has struggled in getting the ball to its hitters.
“It has always been our problem,” Sterling said. “I’ve always told them that in order to get more consistency in our play that we need to be able to pass it more consistently.”
Ottoville 3, Crestview 1
Ottoville advanced past Crestview in the second sec
tional final at Lincolnview and will play Marion Local at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday at Coldwater in the district semifinal.
After Crestview won the first game, 25-19, Ottoville came back to take the next three games — 25-21, 25-17, 25-17.
Samantha Modica led Ottoville with 13 kills, while teammate Holly Heitmeyer recorded 10 kills.
“We worked on hitting and serving all week, and it paid off,” Ottoville coach
Susan Jones said. “I also told them we needed to be more aggressive up front.”
Lydia Etzler and Melissa Drake led Crestview with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Crestview coach Tammy Gregory said her team did not execute as well as it should have.
“I was concerned with getting a bye,” Gregory said. “We had about an 11-day layoff. We just were not able to run our offense.
“But, give Ottoville credit. They came ready to play.”
