Pandora-GIlboa celebrates ninth year with reading mentoring program
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Congratulations to Pandora-Gilboa Local Schools/Pandora-Gilboa Elementary School for being a 9 year Project MORE School! Pandora-Gilboa Elementary has partnered with Project MORE since 2000. The purpose of Project MORE is to help children with disabilities become proficient readers using 1:1 structured reading mentoring. Pandora-Gilboa Elementary will be recognized during the luncheon at the 4th Annual Project MORE Statewide Conference held on May 18th at Bowling Green State University.
Project MORE, Mentoring in Ohio for Reading Excellence, coordinated by the Putnam County Educational Service Center, is a research based 1:1 structured volunteer reading mentoring intervention. It is designed to improve reading for students with disabilities and has demonstrated significantly improved reading results. Project MORE partners with the Ohio Coalition for the Education of Children with Disabilities (OCECD). Project MORE has also proven effective for students who are at risk for reading failure.
For nine consecutive years, independent evaluators from Bowling Green State University's (BGSU) Center for Evaluation Services have validated that students who are provided 1:1 reading mentoring perform better than students who receive only small group reading instruction. Project MORE is a scientifically based reading research (SBRR) program. Project MORE works with 135+ schools and partners with 10 colleges and universities throughout Ohio for the 2008/09 school year. For general information about Project MORE, please contact Amy Freeman, Director: 419.523.5951 or email afreeman@pm.noacsc.org
Each Project MORE student in grades K-4 is scheduled to receive 30 minutes of 1:1 mentoring 4 times per week. Pandora-Gilboa Elementary School needs volunteers to work with students one hour per week using engaging and fun materials for the 2009/10 school year. By volunteering one hour per week, you will be helping a student improve his/her reading skills. Your personal attention can help a child gain the self-confidence he/she needs to become a better reader and also a better student. If you are interested in volunteering at Pandora-Gilboa Elementary School, please contact: Kimberly Bockrath.
