Carey bulldozes Bulldogs
By David Trinko
CAREY — Columbus Grove’s football players ran onto the field Saturday night to an air horn that sounded like a semi truck.
The Bulldogs were in a head-on traffic accident in their football playoff duel at Carey, but they weren’t driving the truck. Carey’s wishbone option offense was, with Trevor Phoenix in the driver’s seat.
Phoenix ran for 213 yards and two touchdowns in the game, leading Carey to a 34-0 win in the Division VI regional quarterfinal. In all, three rushers topped 100 yards. Carey racked up 472 rushing yards in retaliation to losing its regular season finale to Fremont St. Joseph last week.
“All week we talked about the loss,” Phoenix said. “The seniors said after we broke down last week, we should break them down this week.”
If the Blue Devils were a diesel truck of destruction, the Bulldogs, who finished the year at 7-4, were broken down on the side of the road. They managed just 77 yards of offense, led by Rayce Risser’s 12 carries for 48 yards.
Quarterback Jordan Travis threw three interceptions in the loss. Carey’s Cy Strahm had two interceptions, plus he had an interception returned for a touchdown called back by a penalty.
The third-seeded Blue Devils (10-1) advance to play Ada on Saturday at a site to be determined. The Bulldogs end the season at 7-4.
Phoenix and Carey quarterback Tyler Brodman ran the option to perfection. On the first play of the game, Brodman held on to the ball until the last second before pitching to Phoenix, who took it 59 yards and the end zone. Phoenix had a pair of nice cuts on the play to keep the run alive.
He tagged on another first-quarter score with an off-tackle play on the left side for 56 yards. The Blue Devils led 21-0 by the end of the first quarter, with Phoenix running for 137 yards in just the first 12 minutes of the game.
“The fun part is calling the plays and not knowing who’s going to get the ball,” quipped Carey coach Todd Worst, whose team made the playoffs for the third year in a row.
Carey fullback Logan Norden added 20 carries for 116 yards and a touchdown, while halfback Justin Jacoby tallied five carries for 100 yards, with a 37-yard touchdown run.
All of the Blue Devils’ touchdown runs topped 35 yards long except one.
“We had some trouble simulating the option offense in practice,” said Columbus Grove coach Scott Palte. “We were a step slow tonight.”
Palte remained upbeat after the loss. After all, the Bulldogs started the year 1-3 before rolling off six wins in a row.
“We had a lot of sophomores and juniors out there tonight, with almost our entire team coming back next year,” Palte said. “So we’re hoping we can be back in a playoff game again next year.”
