Wapakoneta’s boys bowling team streaked by St. Henry while Versailles handled Minster comfortably as both teams improved to 12-0 for a first-place tie in the West Ohio High School Bowling Conference with two weeks remaining in the season. The squads will compete next at Olympic Lanes in Van Wert at 1 p.m. Saturday against Mississinawa Valley and St. Marys, respectively. They will feach each other the following week at 20th Century for the league title.
Wapakoneta stormed out of the gate against St. Henry 1,010-916 then watched as St. Henry worked back into the match with a 1,002-949 victory. Wapakoneta then stretched its lead throughout the baker format, taking the final baker game 240-194. Zach Miller rolled the top score of the day with a 239 to pace Wapak. He gained a big boost from Zerrick Brannan, who rolled 223-221.
Versailles was home at McBo Lanes and used that advantage to crunch Minster 2,899-2,309. Michael Davidson and Kyle Bohman rolled matching 236s to pace the Tigers.
Ottawa-Glandorf maintained a hold on third place at 10-2. Jake Hashbarger rolled a 238 to be the lead Titans in a win over Ansonia 2,677-2,348.
Lima Central Catholic stayed on a roll behind a team effort with a hard fought 2,548-2,484 win over Fort Recovery. Trent Dues rolled a 221 for Fort Recovery. Nick Noggler, who rolled a brilliant 289 game in a makeup from last week’s weather-interrupted session, rolled 189 this past week.
The Thunderbirds, greatly improved this season, and are just two matches away from finishing above the .500 mark for the first time since joining the conference.
Coldwater used the baker format to defeat a St. Marys 2,678-2,614. The Roughriders got out of the gate to take games one and two and lead the match by 26 pins entering baker play. Coldwater, which has three conference match losses by a total of 48 pins, took game one of the bakers 203-148 to claim the lead and secured the victory in baker game four 223-185.
St. Marys inches by Wapak
Coldwater rolled over New Bremen 2,713-1,816 to stay unbeaten and maintain the one match lead over St Marys. Jenna Wennings (226-198), Kelsey Koesters (208) and Erika Hartings (198) led the Cavaliers.
Erica Keysor rolled a 243 for St. Marys to gain medalist honors and pace the Roughriders over the Redskins. Emily Walter’s 220 gave her teammate support in the battle for second place.
Haley Grieves (216) paced a well-balanced Wapak squad, whichheld the lead in the battle prior to the final two baker games.
Seven of the top 21 scores in the conference were rolled by seven different Versailles team members. Tori Minnich (214), Brooke Wehrkamp (213) and Megan Ward (211) led the squad. Minnich and Wehrkamp are sophomores and Ward is a freshman.
“We bowled great in the Pioneer Classic at Westgate, qualifying for the match play and then losing to the team that finished second,” LCC coach Ashley Miller said. “I really feel that the girls are improving and doing better at recognizing when they need to adjust. They are able to tell me the mistakes that they make which is a good thing as well.”
The T-Birds defeated Minster 2,008-1,974. Olivia Casey was team medalist with a 180.
